Thanksgiving Coloring Book for Toddlers
Turkeys, pies and fall fun. Big shapes, one word under every picture.
For ages 2 to 4, choose a coloring book with thick outlines, big open shapes, one picture per page and pages printed on one side only. Skip tiny details and busy scenes: at this age the goal is enjoying the crayon, not staying inside the lines.
Every child is different, so treat these as rough guides, not milestones. Many 2 year olds scribble and enjoy the motion and the color, and a page is "done" when they say it is. Many 3 year olds start to color in a way that follows the shapes. Many 4 and 5 year olds begin to care about staying inside areas and about choosing colors on purpose.
Because of that wide range, the same book works best when the shapes are big enough for scribbling and still interesting enough to color carefully.
Thick, dark outlines make the areas easy to see and easy to color. Big open shapes mean fewer tiny spaces to get frustrated by. One picture per page keeps the scene simple. Pages printed on one side only mean markers cannot bleed onto the picture behind, and the blank back is handy for testing colors.
A single simple word under each picture is a bonus: a grown up can read it aloud and the child slowly starts to recognize it, with no sentences to get through.
Crayons and colored pencils work on almost any coloring book paper. Washable markers are fine, but with heavy markers it helps to slip a spare sheet behind the page. Jumbo crayons are easier for small hands than thin ones.
If your child is under 3 and still tastes crayons, look for non toxic crayons and stay nearby.
More is not always better. A book with a few dozen big, simple pictures is plenty for a toddler, because kids tend to return to favorite pages. What matters more is variety of subjects, so the book keeps feeling new.
Many children enjoy scribbling on a big, simple page from around 18 months to 2 years, with a grown up nearby. Pick thick crayons and large shapes.
Yes, especially with markers. Printing on one side only keeps ink from showing through to the next picture.
